Skincare

None of this is expert advice. It's what people worked out for themselves, usually the hard way — what actually helped, and what they'd tell someone standing where you are. Take what fits and leave the rest.

How this was put together

  1. Apply sunscreen to your ears, including the tops and behind them, as these areas have thin skin and are prone to sun damage and cancer.

Ears have thin skin that is always exposed and prone to skin cancer; some people required surgery for growths or cancer on their ears due to sun damage.

  2. Wear UPF-rated gear, dark long-sleeved shirts, hats, or pants as an alternative or supplement to sunscreen.

Dark clothes block UV rays better, and covering up eliminates the worry of missing spots.

  3. Eliminate dairy from your diet to potentially reduce acne.

Dairy consumption can lead to hormonal imbalances that stimulate overproduction of oil; some report acne clearing within a week or two months of stopping.

  4. Reapply sunscreen regularly throughout the day, especially if swimming, as protection does not last all day.

Sunscreen doesn't last all day; without regular reapplication, low risk predictions are not true.

3 more on this
  1. Apply sunscreen when skiing, snowboarding, or shoveling snow to prevent burns from UV reflection.

Snow reflects sunlight and amplifies sunburn risk, potentially causing severe burns even in winter conditions.

  2. Keep multiple sets of pillowcases or use clean t-shirts and hand towels to ensure a fresh surface every night without waiting for laundry.

    • Place a clean t-shirt or towel over your pillow to create a barrier if you cannot wash pillowcases frequently.3
  3. Use hypoallergenic, non-fragranced detergent, such as infant detergent, to wash pillowcases.

Baby detergent is gentler and less irritating to skin.
