None of this is expert advice. It's what people worked out for themselves, usually the hard way — what actually helped, and what they'd tell someone standing where you are. Take what fits and leave the rest.

Piracy denies authors credit and money for their knowledge.

Analyze the root reasons behind your values (e.g., valuing money for security) to develop principles that achieve those underlying needs.
Discovering the reason you value something helps you develop your principles.

Get important verbal understandings in writing when dealing with business owners or partners whose character you may not fully know.
Assuming a verbal understanding is enough because known owners are good people can be risky if unknown owners are problematic.
