Call the referral line or ask 211 to find your local program. Help is limited each year, so applying early helps.

Before you call

Have ready

your city, county and state: the hotline email asks for them, and the office search tool searches by state, territory or tribe
your household size, income and any benefits you receive: eligibility depends on them and varies by state
your shutoff notice and a recent bill: some state programs ask for them to show the crisis

They can

give you the energy-assistance referral line on 1-866-674-6327, and point you to your state's LIHEAP office
tell you what LIHEAP can cover where you live, which may include energy bills, crisis assistance, equipment repair and weatherization

They cannot

pay you from this line: the federal office does not give grants to individuals; help comes from your state or tribal LIHEAP office, which decides who is eligible
ask you for a fee: LIHEAP does not charge one, and a message that offers a grant or asks for a fee is a scam to report to the HHS Fraud Hotline on 1-800-447-8477

A person answers on weekdays. ACF gives 9am to 7pm Eastern and energyhelp.us gives 10am to 6pm Eastern, so call between 10am and 6pm Eastern to be sure.
