Find your local council (GOV.UK)

Enter your postcode to find your local council's website, then look for its environmental health or private housing team to report an unsafe rented home.

Good to know

In England, councils have powers to get repairs done at no cost to you and may help protect you from being evicted for complaining. If your landlord is the council itself, complain to it as your landlord instead. In Northern Ireland, use nidirect's list of local councils.

Before you call

Have ready

  • the dates you told your landlord, and copies of your messages
  • photos or video of the problem
  • who lives with you, including children and anyone ill

They can

  • inspect a privately rented or housing association home and take action against the landlord

They cannot

  • act against itself if the council is your landlord: complain to it as your landlord
