Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas businesses and engineers who are allowed by law to do gas work. You can search by postcode to find one, check a business by its registration number or trading name, or check an engineer by the licence number on their ID card. The register also looks into reports and complaints about unsafe gas work, and investigates people doing gas work illegally. You can use the website, or call to find or check an engineer.

Good to know

The register is run by Capita on behalf of the health and safety authority (the Health and Safety Executive in Great Britain). nidirect gives its number as a “freephone number”. Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before work starts. The back of the card shows what work that engineer is qualified to do, and the site says not all engineers are qualified for all types of gas work. Each year a new card is issued with a different licence number. The register says it does not recommend one engineer over another, does not get involved in money or contract disputes, and does not carry out criminal background checks on engineers. If you smell gas, do not use this number: use the gas emergency number.
