Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

The workplace health and safety regulator for England, Scotland and Wales. You can report a health and safety issue at a workplace online; if you cannot do it online, they will fill in the form for you by phone.

Good to know

Shops, restaurants, bars, nurseries, care homes and similar workplaces are covered by your local council's environmental health team instead. HSE does not share your details with the business, but says the business may work out who reported it. If you are self-employed you may have to report your own accident to HSE.

Before you call

Have ready

  • the address of the workplace, the business's name and the name of the person in charge, if you know them
  • what the issue is, who is at risk and how long it has been going on
  • any photos or other evidence

They may ask

  • what you want them to do, such as investigate
  • a phone number or email they can use to contact you

They can

  • take your report online, or fill in the form for you by phone if you cannot do it online

They cannot

  • deal with shops, restaurants, bars, nurseries, care homes and similar workplaces: your council's environmental health team does
  • promise that the business will not work out who reported it
