Macmillan Support Line

If you have cancer, or someone close to you does, you can talk to trained advisers, including cancer information nurses, about a diagnosis, tests and treatments, side effects, money and work, or how you are feeling. You can call, chat online, email, or ask them to ring you back.

Good to know

Macmillan says calls are "free on all UK landlines and UK mobile phones"; from a business phone, check with your provider. Money advisers can help with benefits, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You can ask for an interpreter, set up a British Sign Language video call by email or chat, or use text relay on 18001 0808 808 0000. Online chat is for people aged 18 or over. Macmillan says calls "may be monitored and recorded for quality and training purposes." In an emergency, call 999.

Before you call

They may ask

  • for online chat, which is for people aged 18 or over, a couple of basic questions like your name and email address, and what you want to talk about

They can

  • talk with you 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm, on 0808 808 00 00, whether you have just been diagnosed, are having treatment, are supporting someone with cancer, or have questions about life after treatment
  • give emotional support and practical information about all aspects of cancer, from trained advisers including cancer information specialist nurses
  • help you look for benefits and financial support you may be entitled to, through their money advisers, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
  • ring you back during opening hours if you leave your number, or answer an email through their online form
  • give you an interpreter if you say, in English, the language you want, or set up a British Sign Language video call if you ask by email or chat

They cannot

  • advise on healthcare systems outside the UK. From abroad the number is +44 207 091 2230, and Macmillan says those calls are not free
  • replace emergency help: if you need emergency medical help, call 999 or go to A&E

Macmillan says a chat reply normally comes in under ten minutes, and an email reply within 2 working days.
