Missing People

If someone you love is missing, or you are away from home or thinking of leaving, you can call or text for free, confidential support. Once the police have a report, they can launch an appeal and help you with the media.

Good to know

They cannot report someone missing to the police for you: call 999 if a child is missing or someone is at serious risk, otherwise 101. Calls and texts are free, even with no credit. Texts sent after 10pm are answered when they open.

Before you call

Have ready

  • if someone is missing: a report to the police first. Missing People cannot report it for you

They can

  • talk it through, free and in confidence, if you are not sure whether someone is missing or at risk, or if speaking to the police feels hard
  • launch an appeal for your missing person once they have been reported to the police, and help with the media
  • give you ongoing support from a Family Support Worker, for as long as you need it
  • for someone who is away: pass a message in their own words to a family member over 18 without knowing where they are, or set up a 3-way call
  • use Language Line interpreters for people who do not speak English

They cannot

  • report a person missing to the police for you
  • take phone calls after 5pm: text 116 000 until 10pm, or use online chat from 5:30pm
  • answer overnight: for urgent help call 999 or 101; Samaritans, Childline and Shout are open 24 hours

Texts sent after 10pm are answered once the helpline opens. Email 116000@missingpeople.org.uk for a reply within 24 hours.

We list this organization because it is a national service for the need on this page. We’re not affiliated with it, and we don’t speak for it. Last checked October 9, 2026: we opened its own site and confirmed this link and number. We don’t call the lines, and hours can change — their site has the latest.

Heavy moment? Call Samaritans on 116 123 — or we’re here.
