Police: report stalking or harassment (999 or 101)

Call 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger. If it is not an emergency, call 101, or report stalking or harassment online, to the police in England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Police Scotland also takes reports in person. GOV.UK says you have a right to feel safe in your home and workplace.

Good to know

Calls to 999 and 101 are free. You can report online in each of the three police areas. If you are not sure whether it is stalking or harassment, Police Scotland says to tell them what has happened and they will explain. In Northern Ireland, Tesco Mobile and giffgaff users call 028 9065 0222 instead of 101. The Metropolitan Police say you do not need to collect evidence before you report.

Before you call

Have ready

  • as much information as you can about what happened: where, when, and what the people involved look like (the Northern Ireland government's advice on what to tell the police)
  • details of anyone who saw it, and how it has affected you
  • a record of what has happened, if you have kept one: it is useful, but the Metropolitan Police say you do not need to collect evidence before you report
  • your contact details, and whether you are worried about your own or your family's safety, so that they can give you the right advice

They can

  • take a report of stalking or harassment by phone on 101 or online when it is not an emergency; Police Scotland also takes reports in person
  • explain what it is and what can be done, if you are not sure whether it is stalking or harassment: Police Scotland says to tell them what has happened
  • send help if you call 999 because you or someone else is in immediate danger

They cannot

  • be reached on 101 in an emergency: call 999

Write down the crime reference number you are given, and who you spoke to. Action Against Stalking advises keeping a record of who you speak to and any crime reference numbers.
