Respect Phoneline
If you are worried about your use of violence or abuse towards a partner, you can talk it over with an adviser and hear about domestic abuse programmes that help people change, where there is one. It is for men and women, in same-sex or heterosexual relationships. Friends, family and frontline workers supporting someone who is abusive can call too. It is a helpline and webchat.
Good to know
It is run by Respect, a registered charity. The site says calls are “Free from landlines and mobile phones within the UK” and “will not appear on itemised bills”. It does not give anger management information: the site says anger management courses “are not suitable help” for abuse towards a partner. Its policies page lists when information is passed on, including when advisers are concerned about a risk to the safety of a child or vulnerable adult, and its FAQ says it may be required by law to share information “where there is concern over someone’s safety”. Webchat chats are kept as transcripts for 6 months. In an emergency, call 999.
Before you call
Have ready
- nothing is needed: the site says they do not ask for your name, date of birth or address
They may ask
- questions about the behaviours you are using, so they can help you be safer around your partner and any children. Some may feel too personal; you can say you are not ready to talk about something.
- at the end, optional monitoring questions for their funders: how you heard about the line, your age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic group and local authority. The site says you cannot be identified by these answers.
They can
- listen and give advice about your situation
- tell you about domestic abuse programmes that help people change, where there is one
- give you around 30 minutes, and more if your situation is complex
- get you an interpreter by phone, or talk through Relay UK
- move your call to an adviser of a different gender if you ask, if one is available
They cannot
- give anger management information: the site says it is not suitable help for abuse towards a partner
- take a call outside Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, or webchat outside Monday to Friday, 9am to 10am
The site says it is a busy line, the queue has no maximum waiting time, your call stays in it until an adviser is free or the line closes, and you hear your place in the queue every minute or so. On webchat, try to reply within 2 minutes.
