Shout

You can text with a trained volunteer about anything weighing on you, from stress and loneliness to self-harm or suicidal thoughts. You only share what you feel comfortable sharing.

Good to know

It is free. Replies can take longer at busy times, and the highest-risk texts are answered first. If your life is at immediate risk, call 999.

Before you call

They can

  • reply by text, 24 hours a day, to anyone in the UK who needs support: text the word SHOUT to 85258, free
  • talk with you about anxiety and stress, low mood, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, panic attacks, loneliness, abuse or bullying, sharing only what you feel comfortable sharing

They cannot

  • act as an emergency service: if your life is at imminent risk, call 999
  • always reply at once: replies can take longer at busy times, and the highest-risk texts are answered first

Replies can take longer at busy times. The page suggests its online resources while you wait.

We list this organization because it is a national service for the need on this page. We’re not affiliated with it, and we don’t speak for it. Last checked October 3, 2026: we opened its own site and confirmed this link and number. We don’t call the lines, and hours can change — their site has the latest.
