SNAP Cymru (additional learning needs advice, Wales)
Free, impartial and confidential information, advice and support for families in Wales on additional learning needs (ALN) at school, from assessments and individual development plans to disagreements with a school or council. They can help you prepare for meetings, understand letters and reports, and write letters. Some cases go to a specialist caseworker.
Good to know
This is a message line, not a live adviser. You call, leave your contact details and a short note about your problem, and the team reviews it. Information is usually sent by email, and a caseworker contacts you directly if you need more support. They may also call, email or text you for more detail. Their page says demand is extremely high. The call is charged at standard network rates. The page gives office hours, not the times the line takes messages. You can also use the online ALN enquiry form on their contact page: they promise an email reply within five working days. Some other listings, such as NHS 111 Wales, show a different free 0808 number with Tuesday and Thursday hours. SNAP's own SNAP Connect and contact pages give the number on this card.
Before you call
Have ready
- your contact details
- a short description of your enquiry or the problem
- where in Wales you live, if you can say: it helps them match you to the right support
They may ask
- your contact details and a short description of why you are contacting them
- your location in Wales, if you can give it
They can
- review your message and send information or guidance directly to you, usually by email
- pass you to a specialist caseworker, who will contact you directly, if your situation needs more in-depth support
- give free, impartial and confidential information and advice on additional learning needs, for families of children and young people aged 0 to 25
- help you prepare for meetings, understand reports and letters, write letters, and support you with assessments and individual development plans
They cannot
- answer you live on the phone: you leave a message and they get back to you, and their page says demand is extremely high
- promise a reply time on the phone line: only the online enquiry form gives one, an email reply within five working days
- help families outside Wales: their page says it is for families, children and young people who live in Wales
- give you a free call: it is charged at standard network rates
They may call, email or text you, and sometimes they need more information: look out for all three. Demand is extremely high.
