Leave notes for future you

Some of the best home advice in our library isn’t about fixing anything. It’s about being kind to a person who doesn’t exist yet: you, three years from now, standing at the breaker panel with a flashlight in your teeth, or squinting at a laptop sticker that wore blank last summer.

The sharpie move

A piece of quiet genius: every time an outlet or switch gets replaced, write the circuit-breaker number on the back of the faceplate before you screw it on. It costs four seconds while the plate is already off. The member behind this one had been doing it for years and said it earns its keep most in older homes — the ones rewired in several rounds, where the panel’s labels stopped telling the truth two owners ago. The day something trips, the answer is written where you’re already looking.

The photo move

The stickers you’ll desperately need are wearing off right now — and the member who photographs them named exactly when you’ll miss them: the day a laptop needs its system reinstalled or its drivers found, and the product number that unlocks all of that has rubbed blank. Serial numbers, model plates, product keys, the code on the water filter. One photo each, filed in an album called Home, ends that story forever. It’s the same move as the sharpie — moving information from where it dies to where you’ll look.

The check-first move

The costly version of this lesson: a member paid for a home repair out of pocket, then learned the warranty that came with the house would have covered it — if they’d filed the claim before calling the repair company. Warranties, insurance, manufacturer coverage: they pay for the repairs you ask them about first. Five minutes of checking belongs at the front of every repair, not in the regretful middle.
