Stop it when the pops slow down
The time on the box is a guess about a microwave that is not yours. The signal is about three seconds between pops, and the rest is a paper bag.
From people who have burnt enough bags to work out the signal — with the two things everybody worries about looked up, both of which turn out to have been dealt with.
The number printed on the box was worked out on a microwave that is not yours, at a power level that is not yours, with a bag that has been sitting somewhere at a different temperature. It is a guess, and it is the reason people burn popcorn.
Stop the microwave when you can count to about three between pops.
That is the whole technique and it is the only one that transfers between machines. There will be kernels left at the bottom when you do it, and that is the correct trade — the last twenty kernels cost you the whole bag.
Two small things around it. Flatten the bag and squeeze along its length before it goes in, which spreads the oil so it heats evenly. And stay in the room. Almost every burnt bag is a bag somebody walked away from.
The cheaper way, which is also better
Worth knowing even if you never do it, because the gap is large.
Loose popcorn kernels in a plain brown paper lunch bag, folded over twice at the top, straight in the microwave. No oil, no dish, no special equipment, nothing to wash. You season it afterwards, so you control what goes on it, and by weight it costs a small fraction of what the pre-packed bags do — people put it at under a tenth.
A stovetop pan or a dedicated popper does it better still. If you go that way, not olive oil: its smoke point is too low and it burns before the corn goes. Groundnut, sunflower or coconut are the ones that hold.
And the honest counterweight, from somebody in the same conversation: the pre-packed bag exists because it requires nothing of you at half past ten at night. That is a real feature and not a failure of character.
The two things people worry about
Both of these come up every time, and both have moved on, which does not happen often enough to skip saying.
Popcorn lung. The thing people half-remember is real, and it is overwhelmingly a disease of making the stuff rather than eating it. Bronchiolitis obliterans turned up in people working inside popcorn factories, breathing a butter-flavour chemical called diacetyl in industrial quantities every day. It is an occupational disease of manufacturing it, not of having it on the sofa, and diacetyl is no longer used in making popcorn. Where that chemical is still a live concern is in some flavoured vaping liquids, which is a different subject and a real one.
The lining of the bag. Microwave popcorn bags were greaseproofed with the family of chemicals people call forever chemicals. In February 2024 the United States food regulator announced that grease-proofing materials containing them are no longer sold for food packaging there, and described it as the end of a major dietary source. So a bag bought in America now is not the bag the worry was about. That is a jurisdiction and a date rather than a universal all-clear, and if you are somewhere else it is worth knowing that is what changed and where.
Neither of those, in the end, is worth much thought next to what is printed on the side of the box. Look at the salt on the side of the box instead.
The community disagrees on this one
The tip everybody passes on about microwave popcorn is to shake the unpopped kernels out of the bag. The people who have tried it do not agree that it works.
Shake it out, upside down
Open the bag a little at the top, turn it over, and shake. The kernels are heavier and smaller than the popped corn and they fall through and out. People who do this describe getting the bulk of them, and it takes about five seconds before you have committed to eating anything.

Tip it into a bowl instead
The objection is that popped corn packs too tightly to let anything past it, and that in practice hardly any kernels come out. The alternative these people use is simply to pour the lot into a bowl and let the kernels settle to the bottom on their own, where you can see them and leave them. It also stops you eating out of a hot greasy bag.

What decides it seems to be the bag: how it is folded, how tightly the corn has packed. Both take a few seconds, so the honest advice is to try the shake and switch to the bowl when it does not deliver. Worth knowing that a good number of people think this is a non-problem — they eat the half-popped kernels on purpose and describe them as the best part. If that is you, ignore the whole argument.
