Central Violations Bureau (federal tickets)

The Central Violations Bureau (CVB) is a national center that processes U.S. District Court Violation Notices (tickets) and payments for offenses committed on federal property, like national parks and military installations, or for violations of federal law that occur elsewhere. You can call for information about your court date or Notice to Appear, contesting a ticket, when payment is due, or to check that a payment was made.

Good to know

The CVB site allows online payments of federal tickets only, not tickets issued by state or local jurisdictions. Another number: (210) 301-6400. Email: info@cvb.uscourts.gov. Fake texts, emails and calls demanding payment of federal tickets exist: confirm that any link ends in .gov, and if you are unsure about a call, hang up and call the CVB directly. If a real federal ticket stays unanswered after your court date, a U.S. Marshal may phone you and will direct you to the court to appear or pay.

Before you call

Have ready

  • if you are telling the CVB you have moved: your name, location code, violation number and current contact information (phone and email), in writing

They can

  • tell you the status of your ticket: an automated recording at any hour (option 4), or a customer service representative (press 0) from 9am to 5pm Central Time, closed noon to 1pm
  • tell you more about whether a driver education course (traffic school) is an option: not all jurisdictions offer it, and you should contact the CVB before you pay or go to your court date to ask
  • take a change of address, if you send it in writing

They cannot

  • take online payment of tickets from a state or local jurisdiction: the site allows online payments of federal tickets only
  • accept a change of address filed with the post office: filing with the U.S. Postal Service is not sufficient
  • tell you how many points your state licensing authority may apply for a conviction: contact your state's licensing authority before you pay
