LawWorks free legal advice clinics (England and Wales)

A charity that connects volunteer lawyers with people who need legal advice, cannot get legal aid and cannot afford to pay. Its finder lists free local clinics for problems such as employment, housing, consumer disputes, debt and welfare rights. At a clinic you usually get 30 minutes to an hour to explain your problem and basic advice on what to do next.

Good to know

Check whether you can get legal aid first: Civil Legal Advice is on 0345 345 4345. The clinics are run by other organisations, so each has its own rules and its own way to book, by phone, email, in person or online. Some only help people in a certain area or with certain problems. Some cannot advise straight away and send a letter or email summing up the advice.

Before you call

Have ready

  • your postcode, city or town, and the area of law your problem is in, to search the finder
  • documents about your problem: LawWorks has a guide, arranged by area of law, to the documents that are useful to bring

They may ask

  • you to meet that clinic's own eligibility rules, which its page on the LawWorks site sets out

They can

  • show you free legal advice clinics near you, which you can search by area of law
  • give you, at a clinic, 30 minutes to an hour to explain your problem and basic advice on next steps
  • offer advice face to face, by phone, by email or online, depending on the clinic

They cannot

  • give you legal advice or representation itself: independent clinics give the advice, not LawWorks
  • help if you can get legal aid or can afford a lawyer: the clinics are for people who cannot get legal aid and cannot afford to pay
  • take on your case at every clinic: clinics are often only able to give initial advice
  • promise you a place: some clinics have waiting lists or close to new enquiries, and are frequently unable to take people facing an urgent legal deadline
