TaxAid

A charity that gives free, expert help with tax problems, such as Self Assessment and unexpected tax bills, to people who cannot pay for advice. It now includes Tax Help for Older People.

Good to know

In most cases they help people earning under £30,500. They cannot help with company tax, tax planning, tax credits, benefits, council tax or tax outside the UK. Ring rather than use the form: a form reply can take up to 10 working days.

Before you call

Have ready

  • your HMRC letters and your reference number

They may ask

  • your yearly income, any debts or savings, and anything in your life that makes this harder

They can

  • help you on the call, or pass you to a caseworker if the problem needs more work
  • adjust if using the phone is hard because of a disability: tell them

They cannot

  • help everyone: in most cases only people earning under £30,500
  • help with company tax, tax planning, tax credits, benefits, council tax or non-UK tax
