Default Resolution Group (U.S. Department of Education)
The Default Resolution Group is the loan servicer for defaulted federal student loans held by the U.S. Department of Education. You can call it to be directed to your loan holder, to set up a payment arrangement or automatic monthly payments from your bank, or to file a dispute if you think your loan was put in default by mistake. It helps for free.
Good to know
studentaid.gov says to walk away from any company that asks for enrollment, subscription or maintenance fees to help you get out of default. TTY users can call 1-877-825-9923. Regular mail goes to U.S. Department of Education, P.O. Box 5609, Greenville, TX 75403-5609. A written request for documents about your debt goes to Default Resolution Group, P.O. Box 5227, Greenville, TX 75403-5227. For a wage garnishment hearing, studentaid.gov says the request must be in writing, postmarked no later than 30 days from the date the garnishment notice was sent. This page is about federal loans held by the Department of Education: StudentAid.gov says it does not include information about private student loans.
Before you call
Have ready
- any notice you were sent about the debt: studentaid.gov says its deadlines run from the date on the notice
- your Social Security number or account number: studentaid.gov asks for it on a mailed payment and on a written request for documents
They can
- tell you who holds your loan: studentaid.gov says to contact the Default Resolution Group to be directed to your loan holder
- set up a payment arrangement, or automatic monthly payments from your bank for a rehabilitation plan or payment arrangement, by phone
- take a dispute if you think your loan was put in default by mistake
They cannot
- tell you about a private student loan: StudentAid.gov says it does not include information about private loans, so contact the holder of the private loan
- service an FFEL loan that a guaranty agency holds: studentaid.gov says a defaulted FFEL loan not held by the Department goes to a guaranty agency, not the Default Resolution Group, though the group can direct you to your loan holder
- stand in for a written hearing request: studentaid.gov says to make a hearing request in writing, postmarked no later than 30 days from the date the garnishment notice was sent
