Office for Civil Rights (U.S. Department of Education)

Takes complaints about discrimination by schools that receive federal education money, because of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age. You can file online, by email to ocr@ed.gov, or by mail or fax.

Good to know

Anyone may file a complaint, and you do not have to use the school's own complaint process first. A parent filing for a student over 18 needs the student's written consent. A school may not retaliate against you for complaining.

We list this organization because people told us it helped. We’re not affiliated with it, and we don’t speak for it. Last checked October 10, 2026: we opened its own site and confirmed this link and number. We don’t call the lines, and hours can change — their site has the latest.
