HMRC: missed Self Assessment payment

HMRC's line if you have missed a Self Assessment payment, to talk about a payment plan (Time to Pay). Simple Assessment, VAT and employer PAYE have their own numbers on the same page.

Good to know

You can try the online payment plan service first. If you have a Standard Financial Statement from a debt adviser, HMRC accepts it as evidence of your income and spending.

Before you call

Have ready

  • your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) or the reference on the letter
  • your UK bank details: you must be able to set up a Direct Debit
  • your monthly income, spending, savings and other taxes owed

They may ask

  • whether you can pay in full, how much you can pay each month, what you earn and spend, and what savings you have

They can

  • set up a payment plan if it is affordable

They cannot

  • be appealed: you can complain about how you were treated, but not appeal the plan decision
