One small thing you could do
Pick your side of the habit to retire today. Behind the wheel with right of way: just go — taking your turn IS the courtesy. Waved at by a stranger: mouth "thanks," then check every lane with your own eyes before your foot moves.
I was in the car when someone waved a driver through. They crossed on the stranger's word without looking — and were hit in the lane the waver couldn't see.
