Before a hurricane, fill containers with drinking water and keep the bathtub for flushing

One small thing you could do

If an evacuation order covers your area, leave and skip this. If you are staying: count the people and pets in the home, then fill clean, lidded containers with tap water that is safe to drink, at least a gallon a day for each person for 3 days, which is the CDC’s figure, and more for pets, anyone pregnant or sick, or in a hot climate (in the UK, the Be Ready figure is 3 litres a day for each person for 3 days, with more for baby formula, medical devices and pets), and write “drinking water” and the date on each. Put them somewhere cool and out of the sun. Only then fill the bathtub, for flushing and washing, and keep young children out of the bathroom while it is full. Charge your phone and check the battery in your carbon monoxide detector.
